French professor Roxanna Curto creates simulated European travel course with Global Curriculum Development Award

Roxanna Curto, an associate professor of French and Spanish at the University of Iowa , has transformed her classroom into a gateway to French-speaking Europe. With support from the International Programs’ Global Curriculum Development Award, Curto traveled abroad in summer 2025 to design a course that immerses students as “imaginary tourists” in French-speaking countries. Poet, translator, and essayist Hai-Dang Phan is the author of the poetry collection Reenactments (Sarabande, 2019) and the translator of Phan Nhiên Hạo’s selected volume of poems, Paper Bells (The Song Cave, 2020). Phan has taught at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and is currently an Associate Professor of English at Grinnell College.
