Add a Minor in French
The undergraduate minor in French requires a minimum of 15 s.h., including at least 9 s.h. taken at the University of Iowa. Students must maintain a grade-point average of at least 2.00 in all courses for the minor and in all UI courses for the minor. Coursework in the minor may not be taken pass/nonpass. CLAS minors may only be earned concurrent with or subsequent to earning a University of Iowa bachelor's degree.
The French Language and Culture Advanced Placement (AP) exam with a score of 4 or higher is considered to be the equivalent to FREN:3000 Third-Year French. Furthering Language Incentive Program (FLIP) credit may not be counted toward the minor.
Coursework
Student select from French (prefix FREN) courses numbered 3000–4999. One course numbered below 3000 may also count toward the elective requirement if it is numbered 1005–1699, 1901–2009, or 2501-2999. Students who have completed FREN:2001 or FREN:2002 may also apply up to 3 s.h. from one of these courses to the minor.
A maximum of one course taught in English may be applied to the minor.
Study Abroad
Credit from the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) programs in Pau and Lyon, France, and the Study in Montpellier program in France counts as University of Iowa credit for the minor; 6 s.h. earned in other study abroad programs may be counted toward the minor.

Advanced Placement Credit Policy

French Language and Culture exam
- Students achieving a test score of 4 or 5 are given 3 semester hours and credit for FREN:3000 - Third-Year French.
- May be used to complete the General Education Program: World Languages requirement; or applied to requirements for the French major or minor; or used as elective hours.
- NOTE: If you’re interested in earning Furthering Language Incentive Program (FLIP) credit or continuing language study, consult your adviser or the department to avoid duplication.
