Scholarship opportunities by major

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences scholarships

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences also awards scholarships to students continuing coursework in a major within the college. Some scholarships are open to all liberal arts and sciences students and others are for select liberal arts and sciences majors. 

James and Syndy Conger Scholarship 

Award up to $2,000

Awarded to a currently enrolled undergraduate student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, with over 30 hours of earned college credit, majoring in one of the following departments: Chinese, Classical Languages, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish. Student must be seeking their first undergraduate degree, maintain a minimum 3.5 UI GPA, be enrolled full-time, and demonstrate financial need through completing a FAFSA. 

Esther Walls Scholarship 

Award up to $3,000

Awarded to currently enrolled undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences majoring in one of the following departments: American Studies, Anthropology, Art and Art History, Chinese, Cinema and Comparative Literature, Classics, Communication Studies, Dance, English, French and Italian, Geographical and Sustainability Sciences, German, Health and Human Physiology, History, Japanese, Journalism and Mass Communication, Korean, Linguistics, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, Russian, Social Work, Sociology, Spanish and Portuguese, Theatre Arts, or Women’s Studies. 

Student must have earned 60+ hours of college credit, have a minimum UI GPA of 3.75, be seeking their first undergraduate degree, and continue full-time as a junior or senior.

Burns H. Weston International Human Rights Essay Prize

The UICHR sponsors the annual Burns H. Weston International Human Rights Essay Prize. Each year, two awards are available: one to an undergraduate and another to a graduate or professional school student.

Center for Advancement Student Impact Grant

Student Impact Grants provide funding for a variety of University of Iowa undergraduate and graduate student activities outside the classroom, such as research, travel, and service projects. The goal is to enable students to pursue opportunities that might not otherwise be possible without financial assistance.

Kenneth J. Cmiel Funded Human Rights Internship Program

The Kenneth J. Cmiel Funded Human Rights Internship Program provides funding to selected students who have secured a summer internship with a local, national or international non-governmental organization or governmental agency engaged in human rights related advocacy, research or education.

Office of Student Financial Aid/Scholarships

At the University of Iowa, scholarships for undergraduate students are available from many sources and are usually merit-based, recognizing outstanding academic achievement and other accomplishments.

Stephen Lynn Smith Memorial Scholarship for Social Justice

Two awards of $4,000 each are given to students who demonstrate a commitment to the principles of social justice and progress. This award is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
