Add a Minor in Arabic Studies

The undergraduate Minor in Arabic Studies requires a minimum of 16 semester hours earned in Arabic courses (prefix ARAB) considered intermediate (2000 level) or advanced (3000 level) for the minor, including 12 semester hours taken at the University of Iowa. One course (3 semester hours) taught in English can count towards the minor requirements. Students must maintain a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 2.00 in all courses for the minor and in all UI courses for the minor. Coursework in the minor may not be taken pass/nonpass. Furthering Language Incentive Program (FLIP) credit may not be counted toward the minor.

Students with previous knowledge of Arabic language, should take the World Languages Placement Test (WLPT) to determine the best level for your first enrollment in a language course.

The undergraduate Minor in Arabic Studies includes courses in language, as well as complementary courses in history, politics, and religion of Middle Eastern cultures. Language courses focus on developing the four communicative skills–speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
