Study Abroad Faculty-led Program Information Session: Maternal Health in Migrant Communities promotional image

Learn more about this faculty-led program designed specifically for public health students, though open to both undergraduate and graduate students of all majors. In past years, this week-long program has included visits to local health care organizations and NGOs as well as some tourism activities. This course will be co-led by Nichole Nidey and Jonathan Platt, both assistant professors of epidemiology in the UI College of Public Health.

Program: Maternal Health in Migrant Communities

Location: Costa Rica

Program dates: summer 2026 dates TBA

Application deadline: TBD, typically early spring 2026

This course will provide students with a comparative public health perspective to explore similarities and differences in the delivery of maternal health care in migrant, rural, and indigenous communities in Costa Rica and Iowa. This course will be taught in the summer in Costa Rica with some coursework completed prior to and after the trip.
