Literary translator Brian Robert Moore will speak on the process of translating dialect and vernacular (as opposed to standar forms of language). A Q&A session will follow with Assistant Professor Diana Thow.
Brian Robert Moore is a literary translator working from Italian. He won the 2025 PEN Translation Prize and the 2025 Italian Prose in Translation Award for his translation of Michele Mari’s novel Verdigris, while his translations of Mari’s work have also won the O. Henry Prize and three PEN Translates Awards. His translation of Lalla Romano’s In Farthest Seas received the 2026 Premio alla Traduzione, awarded by the Italian government for the year’s best translation into English (UK), and his translation of Romano’s A Silence Shared was awarded as the 2024 John Florio Prize Runner-up. Shorter translations and essays of his have appeared in publications such as Granta, The New Yorker, LitHub, n+1, and The Millions. His forthcoming translations include Walter Siti’s Paradise Overload, for which he received an NEA Fellowship, and Michele Mari’s All the Iron in the Eiffel Tower.
