A devoted teacher, translator and talented multilingual editor, Miriam retired from the University of Iowa after teaching Russian from 1962-1993.

Over her career, Paula designed and developed the linguistics program at both the undergraduate and graduate level within the department. While Paula’s focus was Spanish, she also taught and advised students in the Department of Linguistics and had a joint appointment in Linguistics.

Takako received an MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in 1967 during a time when there were very few women and very few people of color in the workshop.

An active birder familiar with the ornithology of the United States, Canada, and Europe, James Sandrock was a professor emeritus of German language and literature at the University of Iowa.
