The University of Iowa Center for Human Rights is offering several opportunities for student funding that may be of note for International Studies students.

International Studies Grad Hannah Huisman Helps Increase Reach of Youth Leadership Program

Working as an intern at Global Ties Iowa, International Studies graduate Hannah Huisman (Class of 2021) is helping to further develop and implement the organization’s Youth Leadership Program. Activities include connecting international and domestic students in the community through inclusive marketing content, informal dinners, country reports, and online coursework. Hannah is a member of the 2022 Emerging Leaders cohort at Global Ties U.S., which is a non-partisan, non-profit organization based in Washington D.C.

IS:3012 featured in Iowa Now: University of Iowa Course Examines Refugee and Immigrant Experience

Students will help educate the community on refugee issues and the Catherine McAuley Center's work, hold an interactive campus event that simulates the refugee experience for invited guests, and create a UI student organization to support local refugees and immigrants.

Bridging people and perspectives: General and language-specific social network structure predict mentalizing across diverse sociolinguistic contexts.

Mentalizing, or reasoning about others’ mental states, is a dynamic social cognitive process that aids in communication and navigating complex social interactions. We examined whether exposure to diverse perspectives, afforded by occupying influential social network positions, predicted bilingual adults’ performances on a behavioral mentalizing rating task in regions of high and low linguistic diversity. We calculated the degree to which respondents’ social network position generally bridged unconnected others (i.e., general betweenness) and specifically bridged language communities (i.e., language between- ness).
